Ijen is on Java, one ferry crossing west of Bali. Bali tours pick you up at your hotel, drive to Gilimanuk, cross to Ketapang and take you to the trailhead for the night hike. The 24-hour trip costs least and gives you a bed. You eat a Javanese dinner, sleep a few hours in a private room, hike, then come back to shower before the drive home. The all-fees tour has no room and includes the health certificate. The private tour is the one to pick if you want your own car and driver.

How the night runs

  1. Bali pickup and the drive west. Denpasar to Banyuwangi via Gilimanuk is about 4 hours by road, and the road is two lanes.
  2. The ferry. Gilimanuk to Ketapang takes about 45 minutes, and loading can take longer. Boats run 24 hours a day.
  3. Paltuding. The hiking gate opens at 02:00 WIB. Java is one hour behind Bali.
  4. The crater. About 3 km up to the rim, then down to the blue fire and the lake.
  5. Back to Bali. The same road and ferry in daylight.

What to have with you

Your passport, because the ticket name must match it. A warm layer: the park lists a warm jacket, anti-slip shoes and a mask as required gear. All three Bali tours provide a gas mask. The health rules page covers the certificate.
