Ijen is the volcano with blue fire. Burning sulphur gas lights up the crater floor at night, and at first light the acid lake below turns turquoise. You walk up from Paltuding in the dark, climb down into the crater, and are back on the rim for sunrise.

Banyuwangi is the town at the foot of Ijen, a short ferry ride from Bali. A night hike from there is the cheapest way up, and the two Banyuwangi listings below include the entrance ticket and a gas mask. From Bali you add the Gilimanuk ferry and a long drive, so the Bali tours run through the night or give you a room first. The Bromo and Ijen combos start in Surabaya or Malang and often end in Bali.

What the night looks like

  • The walk up. From Paltuding it is about 3 km to the crater rim. It takes about two hours for night groups; the national tourism site says 1 to 1.5 hours.
  • Down to the blue fire. From the rim, night tours take about 45 minutes down to the crater floor. The blue fire is burning sulphur gas, up to 600 °C, with flames up to 5 m tall.
  • The acid lake. At dawn the lake shows its colour. It is about 1 km wide, and it is the largest highly acidic crater lake in the world, with a pH of 0.13 measured in its middle in 2008. See the lake and the miners.
  • Sunrise on the rim. The rim looks out to Mount Raung (3,332 m) to the southwest and Merapi (2,800 m) to the northeast.

The sulphur miners

The yellow crust at the lake edge is sulphur. Miners break it off and carry 75–90 kg loads up 300 m to the rim, then 3 km down to the weighing post, usually twice a day. Read more on the miners’ work.

Tickets and the gate

Foreign visitors pay Rp 150,000. Tickets are sold online on the AyoKeTamanNasional platform and collected at Loket Paltuding. They cannot be cancelled, changed or refunded, and the name must match your passport. Some tours include the ticket in the price, such as the Banyuwangi sunrise hike. The tickets and closures page has the fee table and the clean-up days.

Rules for your health

The park asks for a health certificate from the last 3 days, a mask, a warm jacket and anti-slip shoes. It advises people with heart disease, asthma or breathing problems against the hike. The health rules page lists what tours provide.

Where to sleep

There are places to stay in Banyuwangi town, the Ketapang ferry area and Licin on the road up. See where to stay in Banyuwangi.

Ijen in short

What time does the Ijen hike start?

The hiking gate at Paltuding is open from 02:00 to 12:00 WIB, per the park's booking site. Night tours set off from Banyuwangi hotels well before that, so you are at the gate when it opens.

How much is the Ijen entrance fee for foreigners?

Rp 150,000 per person on weekdays and holidays alike. That is the tariff in force from 30 October 2024, and no newer one had been published when checked on 25 October 2026.

Can you do Ijen as a day trip from Bali?

Yes, as an overnight run. Bali tours on GetYourGuide last 18–28 hours or 22 hours and include the ferry both ways. A 24-hour trip adds a room to sleep in before the hike.

Do you need a health certificate for Ijen?

Yes. The park asks for a health certificate issued no more than 3 days before your visit. Several tours, such as the Banyuwangi sunrise hike from $11, include it in the price.

Is Ijen open now?

It reopened on 28 September 2026 after a forest fire closed it from 4 September. It also closes on one Friday a month for clean-up; the next ones are 6 November and 4 December 2026.
